Tips for taking care of your Garbage Disposal

A problem all too common for the plumber is a stuck garbage disposal. So we can help you with some tips and dos and don'ts. The most common problem with disposals is that people think that you can put anything in there, but that is not true. Here is a short list of what you can put into a disposal, only soft food particles, ice cubes, soft bones, fruit pits which actually help clean the inside of the disposal. You can put in citrus fruit peels which will actually freshen up the drain smell.

You can put coffee grounds, disposal cleaners, degreasers and or deodorizers. Do NOT use hot water while you are grinding food, when the disposal is off it is ok but not when the disposal is one. Do not use things like corn husks, artichokes, celery stalks, onion peels and things alike.

Run, the disposal full steam of cold water when the disposal is on. Then as the disposal grinds run the water and then 30 seconds after that. Try to run the disposal less than 30 seconds total. If your disposal smells all you need to do is grind a lemon peel or orange peel for a nice citrus smell. They have one the market deodorizers and cleaners you can try.

If your disposal has a jam you may be able to unstick it with an Allen Wrench in the bottom of the disposal and then crank it to free up the jam. If the rubber splash guard does become torn or deformed or the stopper becomes defected then the stopper can be replaced.

Garbage Disposal is very important as far as maintenance goes, juts like your dishwasher or you washing machine, it is very key in your daily life and if you need to call in a plumber, it may cost you money you were not ready to spend. Save yourself the money and just donate some time maybe once a week or once every two weeks to appliance maintenance.
