Roof Drains: The Hows, Whys, and What to's

Roof Drains are a very important part of the buildings structure, almost all flat roof buildings have them yet there are so many people that are unaware of benefits and the dangers a simple roof drain can provide and the dangers they can impose.

If you have no idea how a roof drain works or even what it is don't worry it will be explained to you so you can understand the facts about them.

Roof drains are a drain that is installed into the roof of the building so that the water from the rainfall can be delivered from the roof of the building to the sewer or drain system on the street level.

Roof drains range in all different sizes and have many different applications as well depending on the roof and the building. Most drains have the basic stainer on them almost like your shower drain but in a larger size of course.

The way a roof drain works is that the water that collects on the roof flows into the roof drain and then is carried though the plumbing lines that are connected to the drain itself and the the flow or end of the pipe is usually dumped into a pump pit, or sewer drain on the street level of the building.

These roof drains have great benefits like keeping the added extra weight of of the top of the roof which in turn keeps the roof in good shape over the years and prevents damage.

With out proper maintenance of the roof drain they can also become a danger to the building and the people that reside in the unit.
Sometimes the drains become blocked by garbage, ice , debris and other foreign matter which in turn causes the roof of the building to start gathering or collecting water which can be very dangerous and sometimes can cause a roof to collapse.

Proper daily or weekly preventive maintenance can help avoid these dangers. Simply just doing a visual inspection of the grates and strainers can reduce a lot of problems, you might want to also make sure they are flowing as well.
