It is a good idea to have a plumber come out and do this task for you. Some people may want to save money but this is something you want to think twice about doing your self.

Some companies have set prices for coming out and doing an all points check on the boiler for the winter months. If you insist on doing this your self, then there are a few things to remember to check out. One major rule is when inspecting your own boiler, always replace your boiler with new gaskets. Make sure you clean and check your low water cutoff.

Make sure that all safety devices are checked and pop test the safety relief valves and the flame safeguard checks and a leak test on the safety shut off valves. If this sounded like a foreign language to you, do not attempt to touch the boiler, leave it to the professionals. You may have to pay for the plumber but if you don?t know what you are doing then it may cost you more.

If you do have common knowledge of the boiler keep a check list so that you are sure to hit everything on it. Here are some things that need to be checked out , all the refractory, you need to replace all fireside gaskets, refractory baffle gaskets, burner gaskets, manholes gaskets, low water cut offs, oil gun assembly, pilot electrode and pilot tube, flame detector, scanner tube, main gas valves, main gas regulators, gas butterfly valves and blower motor.

You should also check the air proving switch, atomizing air pump, air cleaners, strainers, air and oil hoses. You should not wait until winter is here, try performing this maintenance in September when it isn?t too cold out yet, that way if there is a problem then you have time to take care of it.
