How to Remove Air From Your Swimming Pool Lines

One of the most common problems in swimming pool filter systems is the air in the system or the "bubbles" that you see coming from your swimming pool returns or otherwise known as "Jets".

The bubbles you see out your returns or the air that you see through you pump lid is caused by air being sucked in through that suctions side of the pump. Most people think that the air is forming on the return side of the return are "blowing bubbles" but what is really happening is air is being drawn in through they system and then being pushed out though the returns.

Pumps rather suck air then push water, well because its just easier for them to do, Imagine you were drinking though a straw and then you decided to poke a hole in the straw. What would happen?....The air would come through the straw before the drink would and that is exactly what happens when the pump has air leaks on the suction side.

Most suction leaks are right near the pump and can be fixed with a few simple steps, however sometimes the leaks or breaks in the pipes can appear underground and might require some extra work or a professional contractor for the job.

Common Places For Suction Leaks At The Pump:

Checking The Fittings: The male adapters that screw into the front or the suction side of the pump are common known to leak. What happens over time is that sometimes the pump might run a bit hot and the threaded opening could swell and the fitting will become loose or simply not air tight. The fix for this problem is to remove the male adapter and re-teflon tape or pipe dope the fitting and then re-insert or re-thread the fitting back into the pump.

Another common problem: is the "pump lid seal" this is a rubber o-ring or gasket that fits in between the pump lid and the pump housing. If that looks worn and torn just replace that gasket as well.

One more place to check: is the drain plug/s on the pump housing, a lot of times from the vibration of the pump these drain plugs become loose and will have he tendency to suck in air as well. To fix this just un-thread the drain plugs and re-tape the plugs, please note that some drain plugs will have o-rings that you might need to replace as well.

If the above still does not fix the air leaks in your system, then there might be a leak under the ground near the pool wall fittings or in the line somewhere, commonly the pipe might have splits in it, and you would have to locate that leak.
