How to Change A Swimming Pool Filter Multiport Valve

Multiport Valves are a valve that is located or attached to your swimming pool filter. This valve allows you to control the direction or the port that you want to direct the water flowing out of the pump.

Some common multiport companies are Hayward, Pentair, and Nautilus and most of the repair or the replacement for these types of multiports are fairly simply to do with the right tools.

They may be several reasons why you are changing your muliport valve. Some common reasons that the muliport needs to be changed are cracked housing, broken or warn spring, and the most common is the spider gasket that goes bad.

You will need a few tools to change the multiport valve. The tools you will need include, waterpump pylers, teflon tape, and a flat head or common screw driver.

Replacing the Multiport Valve

  • Shut off the pump and the filter


  • Loosen all the unions on the pipes connecting to the muliport.


  • Loosen the union nuts that connect the muliport valve to the filter tank


  • Now that the multiport is disconnected from the pump and the filter spin out the fitting fron the multiport itself.


  • Remove the new multipot valve from the box


  • Take the old fittings and wrap them with new teflon tape or pipe sealent and re-thread them back into the new multiport valve.


  • Connect the unions at the filter tank and the pipes that you disconnected when removing the old muliport


  • Turn on your filter system and check for leaks around all the fittings and the joints of the filter tank, if you notice any leaks or drips make sure you shut down the filter system and redo the process above.
