Fixing Leaks on Swimming Pool Chlorinators

Fixing Leaks on Swimming Pool Chlorinator Swimming Pool chlorinators are a great way to keep the pool water full of chlorine as well as protect the swimming pool lines from wear and tear. They also are a great way to keep the chemicals out of harms way from children.

As much as they have the good sides there are some bad sides to them as well, such as when they start to get old and weathered they will start to leak from a few common places, but not to worry we will teach you how to fix the leaks and when to determine if you are going to need a new chlorinator.

Most Common Leaks On Swimming Pool Chlorine Feeders

There are a few most common areas that a swimming pool chlorine feeder will leak from no matter which brand you have. Whether its a hayward chlorine feeder, or a rainbow chlorine feeder, they mostly have the same parts and generally leak from the same places. Here are some things that commonly leak

  • Top Cover O-ring

  • Drain nut on Chlorine Feeder tank

  • Unions or threaded fittings connecting the feed to the plumbing

  • Compression Nuts ( Offline Chlorine Feeders )

  • Replacing the O-ring

The most common leak is the o-ring on that sits inside the cap of the chlorine feeder, this gets worn out from the cover being removed over time and can easily be fixed by replacing the o-ring. In order to do so just remove the old o-ring and replace it with a new one and then grease the threads on the housing itself with some jacks lube, or some other swimming pool pipe lube.

    Drain Nut leak Repair

The drain nut on the bottom of the tank usually has a rubber washer or an o-ring that completes the seal when the drain nut is tightened. Over time this washer gets worn from the removal and re-installation of the nut from the winterization and the summerization of the pool. Just simply un-thread the drain nut and replace the washer that sits on the nut, then lube the threads with some swimming pool lube and thread the drain nut back into place being careful and not over tightening the plug.

    Fixing the plumbing connection

Inline chlorinators are connected inline with the plumbing of the filter system in two types of ways. One way using unions and another way being hard piped into the plumbing itself. If the chlorine feeder is using unions as a way to connect to the filter system, then simple undo the unions and replace the o-rings that are inside. These o-rings over time become flattened or cracked or dry rotted from age or weather conditions and a simple replacement will solve your leaks. If you chlorine feeder is hard pipe, you will have to un thread these fittings and re-teflon tape the threads on the pipe and the thread it all back together which isn't as easy as replacing your o-rings.

Fixing Leaks On Compression Nuts ( Offline Chlorinators )

The reason they call an off line chlorine feeder off line is because its not directly piped into the filter system, and it uses flexible lines with compression nuts to connect to the fittings or saddle fittings on the pvc pipe. The most common problem with these connections are that the flexible ( usually black ) pipe is cut on a angle. These line must be cut with a clean straight cut or they will leak.

How to decide if its time for a new chlorine feeder

If you have tried all the above and any part was damaged or if before you started to make a repair above and you noticed a major crack, or your feeder is very old then you might want to think about just buying a brand new chlorine feeder.
