Lawn Irrigation System Heads

When building any irrigation system you will not only need pipes and good water pumps. You will also need ways to actually water the lawn. Lawn irrigation system heads are usually associated with sprinklers although this is not 100% correct as lawn sprinkler have special heads that can be different based on the watering action they can deliver. The most common lawn irrigation sprinkler heads used are rotor heads and spray heads.

Spray lawn sprinkler heads can be mounted to get out of the ground when the system is activated if this is required. They can also remain visible the whole time while resting on irrigation pipes. Spray heads can deliver a lot of water in a very short amount of time. They can only be “stopped” from achieving this if water pressure is too low. Be sure to check water pressure requirements when designing your lawn irrigation system. Spray heads are usually used when there is an even lawn surface to be irrigated. It is not recommended to use them on slopes unless you program the entire system to discharge water in shorter periods of time, several times per day. Failure to do so will lead to consuming too much water. Spray heads are not usually built to work at pressures that are higher than 200 kPa because misting problems can appear.

Rotor irrigation system heads will not use that water because they are built to allow lower application rates. This is why they are perfect for slope terrain. Rotor heads also do a better job at applying water with uniformity in mind when compared to spray lawn irrigation system heads. Such heads usually operate in high pressure environments and they rotate around themselves thanks to a special mechanism. Different designs can allow them to rotate in a full or partial circle, based on specific needs.

To put it simple, rotor heads are better at watering larger areas while spray heads are better at watering smaller areas. This does not mean that you can not opt for any of them when designing your lawn irrigation system. You could end up installing a rotor lawn irrigation head system in small areas if you end up saving money by doing so. It is a golden rule to first plan and calculate everything involved in the design of any irrigation system and only after that choosing the best option available.
