Roto Rooter

Roto--Rooter is the largest plumbing and drain cleaning company located in North America. A man named Samuel Blanc was moved to create a better system to unclog drains after he was challenged by a very stubborn clogged drain in his son's apartment. In 1933, Sam Blanc had created a type of sewer cleaning machine that he had fabricated from a washing machine motor, roller skate wheels and a steel cable.

This machine had the cable rotating sharp blades to cut tree roots that would help to eliminate the task of digging up tree roots which is a rather expensive project. It was Blanc's wife that came up with the name Roto--Rooter. In the middle of the 1930's, Blanc was selling his Roto--Rooter machines for $ 250. Then came the depression and many people needed work, so Sam opened up their own Roto--Rooter business.

The company's promise to all of their customers was that they guaranteed that they would never have to dig up a customer's lawn to reach the pipes that were underground. By time the 1950's rolled around the company jingles were all over the radio, there most famous jingle to date is "Call Roto---Rooter, that's the name and away go your troubles down the drain".

The company is North America's largest plumbing and drain cleaning service. The scope of the work is repair and the replacement. The company does not really do new construction very much; their main focus is to provide at home service at a great price. The company services about 90 percent of the American population and about 40 percent of the Canadian population. There are 110 companies that are owned with in big parent company but over 500 that are independent franchised.
