Replacing a Leaking Tee Joint

The process of replacing a leaking tee joint is not that difficult and comes with moderate difficulty when talking about plumber’s skill. The problem is that most of these types of fitting joints are a little difficult to handle due to the fact that there are three pipes linked to it and all need to be linked perfectly in order to everything being done properly. You need to understand that, unless you really know what you are doing, you should not start modifying anything related to plumbing as the damage you could cause will lead to a lot more money spent on repairs then how much you would need to give away when hiring a specialist.

The first thing you need to do when replacing a leaking tee joint is to turn off the water. Whenever an element of the water system is leaking this is what you have to do. There are two ways to achieve this. If the system is remote and there is the possibility of using a local shut off valve just do so. If it is not present then you will have to locate the main water shut off valve and turn it off. Be sure to save some water in a bucket if you are dealing with copper pipes as you might need it to remove the heat caused by soldering.

Once the water is shut off you will have to remove the tee joint. Simply cut it or unscrew it, based on the type of fitting noticed. The next step stands in attaching the new tee joint to the existing pipes. Keep in mind that you might be faced with a problem, especially if you cut off the older lines. You might see that you do not have enough pipes to properly attach the new tee joint. If this is the case you will need to cut more of the pipe and attach special connectors that will make the pipe long enough for the tee joint to be attached. This does not happen when dealing with copper pipes as they are easier to link together, especially if we are dealing with push fit tee joints. Attention is now necessary as you will have to attach the new tee joint. Based on materials used you might need special tools that you can purchase from the local plumbing store. If you are not sure you can get the job done practice on the old tee joint or call a specialist.
