Removing Bad Smells From Your Bathroom Sink

Bad smells from your bathroom sink are a very common problem that can appear in any house. In most cases we are dealing with a situation that is very easy to take care of. Rarely will we need to go for something drastic and even the need of a plumber is only reserved in some circumstances that require it.

When talking about the bathroom sink the most common source of a bad small stands in hair build up when it begins to rot. Such formations mixed with grease obtained from soap will eventually get caught on the pop up lever. It is found a few inches below the sink’s stopper. You can check for such a build up by removing the stopper and looking down the drain with the use of a flashlight. If you see hair you need to take it out. The next step stands in pouring bleach down the drain and let it sit over night. Half a gallon should be enough. When you wake up in the morning you have to flush everything down by using a bucket of boiled water. By doing this you will have a positive effect in the fact that it will eliminate leftover grease and will leave your drain clean and even smelling nice, which is what you wanted in the first place.

A problem can appear when plumbers chose to tie down the stopper and you can not remove it. This is not at all recommended but people still do it. The good news is that we can still do something about it. The stopper comes with an opening at the base. This is where the rod is put in so that the stopper can not be pulled out. You will need to pull the stopper by looking under the sink and looking at the pop up lever found down the rod. There is a knurled nut there and you have to push the pop up knob in order for the stopper gets in the up position. With one hand hold the stopper and with the other one back the nut out until all is clear. You might need to use a pair of pliers but do not use too much strength.

In the event that you still did not get rid of the bad smells you could also purchase special cleaning solutions from the local plumber shop. Also, check the P-trap under the sink. If it lacks water sewer gas will get out and this is also a bad smell that we never want to have in our bathroom.
