How to Clean Grease Traps

It is very important that you clean your grease traps every 90 days. During a 90 day period your traps fill up much that if your system was to overflow it would backup into your place of business as well as into the neighborhood. By cleaning the traps every 90 days or so you can reduce the smell and each time you the clean the traps because it will be easier every time. Another good reason to clean your traps is because it is a JEA Regulation that is enforceable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Remove the lid from the grease trap, the lids are sometimes heavy, if you have to very carefully use a pry bar to ease off the cover. You have to be very careful when removing the cover because there is a gasket under the cover and if you rip the gaskets you will have to replace them.

Once you have the lid removed, pay close attention to how these parts are installed because you are going to have to put it back the exact sane way. If you forget to put in any parts or put a part in wrong it can cause FOG to be released into the sanitary sewer system. It could also cause a clog which would mean a back up of your traps.

You should have a FOG pump out report as you are cleaning out the grease trap, a piece of information that must be recorded on this report is this, use a wooden dowel and a tape measure and determine the amount of grease and solids that are in the trap, record the results into the report.

Next, you can start removing the debris from the grease trap, you can do this by using a bucket or scoop and then dip the bucket or scoop into the trap and pull out the solids and debris. You can vacuum the rest of the debris and liquids with a wet/dry vacuum. Never use hot water or degreasers on your traps. Use soap to clean the internal parts of the trap.

Scrape the baffles and the inside walls and bottom of the trap, flush the screens with water to remove any excess debris. By flushing the screens you can also test the movement from the trap. Make sure all internal parts are seated correctly, reseat the gasket and put the lid back on. Finish your Fog report and mail it to the address on the report and then update your own records and you are finished.
