How do I Remove Mildew?

Removing mildew is a process that depends on the surfaces where it appears. We have different ways to dealing with the problem and you should know how to remove mildew from the most common surfaces that it can appear on.

For starters, we have masonry surfaces. In order to clean mildew you have to utilize a solution of liquid chlorine bleach and always rinse with clear water and dry the entire area as fast as possible. When talking about siding and exterior walls you will need to pay a little more attention. On wood siding you have to use a solution that is made out of 1 quarter household chlorine bleach, 3 quarters of water and a third of a cup of household detergent. Simply scrub with a soft brush and then rinse properly.

Roof mildew is a little more difficult because we are talking about a surface that is difficult to access. No bleach must be utilized when washing asphalt roofing materials. A soft brush and the same formula mentioned above is to be utilized minus the bleach. Walls are also susceptible to mildew and cleaning might be tricky. When you see it appearing you must act quickly as it will quickly spread. Also, the faster you remove it the better the result. Simply wash everything and make sure that the area receives enough sunlight and fresh air after cleaning is done. Pay attention to the need of repairing areas that are bleached or that have lost their color due to cleaning mildew.

Interior painted surface that is covered with oil resin paint or enamel will rarely show mildew. On the other hand latex paints are the exact opposite. A dirty discoloration becomes visible in this case and they can even reach the surface behind the paint. You will need to clean with a solution made out of liquid chlorine bleach and water but only add around 3 quarters of a cup of bleach to one gallon of water. Remember to properly rinse the area. You can also utilize commercial cleaners for painted walls. Always remember to rinse and dry the area cleaned properly. You might even have to repaint with oil resin, enamel or maybe polyurethane paint. It is all up to you!

A lot of other surfaces can get mildew but all can be cleaned eventually. If you have a problem that is not covered here simply go to a local specialized shop and purchase one of the dozens of products that can eliminate mildew on basically any surface out there. If it can be cleaned you will find something in shops to clean it with. Just ask!
