Fixing Air Leak in Hot And Cold Water Lines

Air is present in our water lines but there are different problems that can appear when damage is present and air is no longer as it should be. Also, when we have a crack and air gets in the system, although there is no water leak, again we have problems. Here is what you need to do.

The most common air related problems appear when you are on a well based plumbing system. The first step is just turning off the water supply to your home. If you have a pressure gauge installed analyze it for around 10 minutes and see if it falls. If it does we have a leak on the well side. In most cases you will find it around the check valve that is either on or in the outlet of the submersible pump. The foot valve of a jet pump can also be the problem. If you notice that the pressure is holding there is no leak from the tank to the pump. If this is the case, you will need to call a specialist plumber that knows about well based systems or contact a well driller or specialist in pumps. If you notice that air is present in water, we might be dealing with the pump sucking air. The well might be dry. If the water level in your well drops, you will notice such a condition. A water leak rarely causes air in the water although when dealing with a well system it can happen.

If you have a water heater system installed, it can be common to find air inside your water. This is because water can trap it, based on various possible conditions. In most cases heating the water will drive air as it ends up on the surface. The problem is that this will show bursts of air when turning on hot water. You might think you have air stuck in your pipes but it might just be an air leak at the level of the tank.

One thing is for sure: most air leaks appear in water lines, both hot and cold. Based on the location, you will see that instead of water dripping out, air is taken in. This will cause a lot of problems and it is quite hard to discover because the cracks can be small and still have an impact. You should call a plumber when you suspect an air leak is causing you problems as he will probably be better at tracing and fixing it than you are.
