Fix a Leaking Bathtub Spigot

In most cases it is hard to realize that you have a leaking bathtub spigot. Most individuals notice this when taking a shower or a bath and there is water dripping from the bathtub to the area into the basement or the room exactly below the bathroom. When this is visible we need to immediately take action and start analyzing the problem. In order to do this you will have to take off the faucet access panel and then take a look for water presence around the copper pipe that you see feeding the bathtub spigot. If we are dealing with a bathtub spigot leak the copper pipes will look well and if they appear cracked it is a leak caused by the lines and not the spigot.

The next step you need to do is wait for the area to dry and run water in a normal way for around 5 to 10 minutes. If you notice no water presence you need to take water and pour it over the area where the wall meets the bathtub spigot. If you notice evidence of a leak then we are dealing with a leaking bathtub spigot. In most cases the problem will be the caulk around the area. Even if the original installation was perfect, as time passes we could be dealing with a situation in which the caulk is worn away. If you take a look at the directions provided by the manufacturer you will notice that it does not say anything about re-caulking this area in most cases. The good news is that in most cases simply re-caulking does the trick and you will get rid of the leak.

If one faucet spigot is leaking you have two options: either try to repair it or replace it. You will have to remove the handles of the faucet, the valve stem covers, the valve stems and seats. Keep in mind that your water also needs to be turned off when undergoing this procedure. In most cases removing the valve stems and seats and replacing them with new parts purchased from a plumber store is enough to handle this situation. You will require having a seat removal tool, a pair of pliers, screwdrivers, handle removers and valve stem wrenches. Respect the golden rule of fixing the plumbing system and if you are not sure that you can do it properly just contact a plumber.
