What is a Wheel Cylinder?

A Wheel Cylinder is an instrument that pushed the brake shoes against the drums causing the car to stop. The wheel cylinder operated from a hydraulic system and used in conjunction with internal pistons and pushes the shoes out against the drums.

How does a Wheel Cylinder Work?

There are two pistons located inside a wheel cylinder. There is a cup shaped rubber seal that is inside the cylinder. The job of the seal is to keep the pressure and stop brake fluid from leaking in the piston. As the driver of the car steps on the brakes the hydraulics from the master cylinder5 exert pressure and pushes the pistons inside the wheel cylinder toward the brake shoes so that they can be applied to the brakes. A leaking wheel cylinder is a dangerous thing. What happens when cylinder leaks there is not enough hydraulic pressure to cause the brakes to stop.
