What Is Plumbing

Plumbing comes from the Latin word meaning lead; a plumber is someone with a skilled trade in working with different materials such as pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures. A plumber usually works on providing homes with potable water and a system that is able to drain sewage. Plumbing began in the ancient world of Romans, Persian and Indians and even the Chinese societies. The plumbers designed and created public bath houses that need to have potable water and a way to drain waste.

Other tasks of the plumber include repairing pipe systems, plumbing fixtures and systems such as water heaters. Plumbing is an important part of almost every society's economy. Plumbing provides clean water and a separate system of collecting and getting rid of waste. Basically, plumbing is a huge complex system of pipes and fixtures that every building in every country all over the world has.

Plumbing is sometimes confused with water and sewage system but a way to tell them apart is that plumbing serves an individual building while water and sewage systems service buildings and cities underground. Plumbing in its basic form back in the ancient society went on for many centuries without any progress until the 19th century when aqueducts and lead pipes were introduced.

Over time separate systems were developed and underground the water and sewage system got rid of the use for sewage ditches and cesspools. There are five major categories of plumbing system and subsystems are the Potable cold and hot water supply, Traps, drains and vents, Septic systems, Rainwater, surface and subsurface water drainage and Fuel gas piping.

These days plumbing contractors and trades people often specialize in two categories called drain cleaning and repair and non potable applications called HVAC systems. Almost all work done by plumbers that affect the public's safety and health are government or quasi government regulated. Plumbers can also do work on installation and repair in residential and other office buildings and those do not relate to the government. But they must follow codes that are set by the city as well as the state.

Homes have to be brought to code and that is because it is the plumber's job to keep the water safe for the home owners as well as the building workers or people who live in the buildings. Some times permits may be need so the town has to be the ones to give the permits.
