Ticking in Pipes During and After Opening Taps

We are constantly hit with the possibility of having to deal with noisy pipes in our plumbing system. Unfortunately there are many buildings out there that are basically old. This fact can lead to different noises appearing and it is not at all pleasant to deal with a constant ticking sound or any other sound that might appear including moaning, clicking, clunking and chattering. The good news is that one way or the other all problems can be solved. Unfortunately, in some situations you might need to replace large elements of the plumbing system and this can add up to the bills you regularly pay. We are also dealing with the possibility of reducing the sounds, an option that does cost less and that can be applied in a lot of cases.

The most common ticking sound you hear is linked with the hot water pipes. They were cool and then they are faced with a rapid heating caused by water that is flowing through it. This sound will appear when you open the taps and even after that, until the temperature gets regulated. The noise can be dampened by utilizing proper pipe insulation and most cases show a very good improvement by doing so. Do not think that chattering and moaning sounds are similar to ticking. Such noises are usually signs of water pressure that is higher than normal. In such a situation a specialist needs to be contacted if the sounds continue to be heard.

Also, do not make the error of thinking ticking sounds like air inside the pipes. In most cases ticking is very hard to trace because the lines that are usually affected are inside the wall. We could also be dealing with hot water pipes expanding and then contracting against a pipe strap or even wooden stud. Unfortunately, if this is the case there is no real way to handle it except tracing the area where the noise appears stronger and opening up the wall. This will allow you to secure the pipe better and remove the annoying ticking sound. The problem is that it will also cause you to fix your wall. The correct approach would be to call a plumber and to have him check up the entire system before even thinking about breaking down a wall. There might be something simple that you missed and can be solved easily.
