Replacing a Faucet - The Do's & Dont's

Installing a faucet is very easy. The only thing that varies stands in mounting different hole locations and supply tubes but the basics of the installation are always the same. Every new faucet will come with a set of directions so you must respect them. In most cases we are dealing with the facts mentioned below.

The first step is removing the old faucet. Do not forget to turn off the water at the stop valve usually located under the sink or maybe even the main shut off valve. Remove the riser tubes and then loosen the bolts under the faucet. It should be easy to remove and the only problem is that it can get stuck because of plumber putty that was previously applied. Do not force it and simply scrape it off the top of the sink area. It should come off easily now.

Next we need to put plumber putty on a piece of rope and simply stick it round the new faucet body, at the underside perimeter. Only use a thin piece of rope as you may see that it won’t fit if it is too thick. Just take the faucet and place it on the sink, making sure that it is aligned properly. You need to tighten the hold bolts until you will see that putty is filling the area between the faucet base and the sink. Cut away the extra putty with a screwdriver or something pointed but pay attention to not cut to deep.

Faucets usually have special copper tubes that will extend under the sink for more than enough needed. You can reach the nuts easily but you must pay attention that you will align the riser. If this is a problem you can remove the shutoff valve and simply put it closer to the stop valve. This will remove the possibility of getting leaks. You can use a flexible riser tube in order to achieve this. Now all you need to do is remember to test the faucet. All the nuts must be tightened and the aerator should be removed. Simply turn on the water and find possible leaks. Fix them and your work is complete! Always remember to only install a new faucet if you think you can and if you have doubts ask somebody to help you or even consider a plumber. Do not face the problem yourself unless you think you can handle it and if something bad happens just call a specialist!
